V 1
He is upstairs, on the phone or computer,
talking to people from other towns.
And you're in the kitchen, just making his dinner.
And dreading the moment when he will come down.
This silence between you is painful to hear, but harder still to break.
So many things you're longing to tell him; how much more can you take?
Your baby boy is a baby no longer,
And he's making choices you don't understand.
You long for the days when life was so simple.
You're missing the days when he held your hand.
Thinking these thoughts sends a pain through your heart, and you wonder if it might break.
The ones we love can hurt us the most; how much more can you take?
C
Do you know in your heart that it isn't his fault?
Do you see in his eyes this is what he wants?
Do you know in your soul he can't help how he's made?
With this war that's inside you, with bias that blinds you,
and love that makes your bones ache,
how much more, how much more can you,
how much more can you take?
V 2
Your dreading the day when he has a boyfriend
because you'll have to tell him they can't kiss in the house.
The thought of him kissing someone of his gender.
brings a hard, bitter taste to the back of your mouth.
And because you are Catholic, you fear for his soul; you'd change him for his own sake.
But he wants no part of Heaven or Hell; how much more can you take?

B
Nothing will change because you ask it to.
Nothing will change on a whim.
He says, "We'll meet in the middle," but there's no room to wiggle
when you think what he is is a sin.
You think that your son is a sin.
V 3
So you'll make him a sandwich and send him to school.
And hope when he's home, you'll have something to say.
Something that isn't just shouting or crying
and maybe you'll tel him you love him someday.
